HealthandSafetyawareness is the responsibilityof every student,
visitor andemployee.
Living in a communal lifestyle can have its own hazards.Whilst living in accommodation
you are expected tohelpmaintaina safe livingenvironment. BreakingHealthandSafety
regulations is a very seriousmatter, which could lead todisciplinary action being taken
against you. Youmust take responsibility for your actions andconsider theHealthandSafety
of others.
Please do not leave food unattendedwhilst cooking.
Report any potential hazards to anymember of TheStudent Village Team staff immediately.
Please note that TheStudent Village Teamwill carry out weeklyHealth andSafety checks
in communal areas of flats.
The following list gives examples of the type of behaviour that constitute a breach of Health
andSafety regulations. This list is provided as a guide and is not an exhaustive list.
Any students breachingHealth andSafety regulationsmust pay the full cost to repair
and/or replace any damaged safety equipment, whichcanbe very expensive:

•Misuseof a firealarmor fire fightingequipment,
e.g. fireextinguishers.
•Useof electrical adaptersnot suppliedby theUniversity.
•Damage to or the removal of door andwindow
closers - especially those on fire doors.
• Failure to evacuate immediatelywhen the fire alarm
sounds or returning to the buildingbefore
permission has been given.
•Propping open of fire doors - any doorwitha self-closing
mechanismor an appropriate sign on is a fire door.
•Removing or defacing notices relating toHealth
andSafety.
•Blocking corridors, stairways or fire exits.
•Allowing a room or a flat tobecome so unhygienic
that itmay cause a risk to health.
•Storage of flammablematerials is not allowed
e.g. petrol/solvents/fireworks.
•Activating a fire alarmdue to non attendance of food
whilst cooking.
•Dryingwet clothes in your roomwill encouragedamp.
You should use the laundry towash anddry clothes.
